A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from
his roots a Branch will bear fruit. Isaiah 11:1
Isaiah
wrote of the someone who will come to the earth with wisdom, knowledge,
judgment, righteousness, faithfulness peace and he will be of the line of
Jesse. Later on in this chapter, we
read:
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for
the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be
glorious. Isaiah 11:10
This “root” will be adored by people
in many nations, so his influence spreads to the world.
David was born from
the line of Jesse and both Matthew and Luke trace the family tree through
Jesse, to David and then to Jesus.
In Luke 4, Jesus
went to Nazareth and spoke in the synagogue.
He read from Isaiah 11.
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant
and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this
scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:20-21
Jesus confirmed he was the promised one, the Messiah,
from scripture.
