What is God’s plan for us?

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.” Jeremiah 29:11-14

God spoke to Jeremiah to comfort the nation of Israel which he was about to allow them to go into exile and scatter them throughout the world. These were difficult plans, temporarily bringing an end to Israel as it was known. However, the heart-breaking plan would eventually lead to hope, prosperity, reconciliation, reunion and ultimately bring them (and others) back into the arms of God.

Now what about our lives? Does God have a plan? Yes. Understanding that plan has a lot to do with us and our willingness to sacrifice our plans and purpose. Romans 8:28 says this:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Every moment we encounter, good and bad, leads us ultimately to God’s plan for our lives as long as we follow the call. There are specific calls for our lives – becoming a pastor, going on a mission trip, feeding the poor, then there are general calls on every life – love the Lord your God with all your strength and love your neighbor as yourself.

God has a plan and he wants us to know it. If we pay attention to the circumstances we face and the passions of our heart, we’ll find it.
