“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he
said.
Then
Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately
Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he
said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:28-31
Peter sank because he doubted he
could walk on water. What’s interesting
is that he was walking on water when he thought he couldn’t walk on water. Why is that?
He saw the wind and waves and became
afraid. Fear causes doubt and we begin
to sink. Peter suddenly realized, “Wait,
I can’t walk on water. This is too much
for me.” But he was walking on water,
not of his own strength. Peter walked on
water because of God’s strength.
Faith
defeats fear. Do not have faith in
yourself or you will sink, but have faith in someone greater than yourself so
you can walk straight ahead without fear, over whatever obstacle is in your
way.
