Did Jesus make the Old Testament irrelevant?

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” Matthew 5:17-18

Jesus made this statement that his arrival on the earth did not nullify the previous scriptures.  In fact, he came to prove that it was all true.  The Old Testament prophecies pointed to Jesus.  He lived out the commandments perfectly.  There are glimpses of him here and there in the Old Testament, from Genesis to Malachi.

No, the Old Testament message is still true today.  It still reflects the heart of God.  However, some of practices are unnecessary (animal sacrifices, temple purification) because Jesus died on the cross to fulfill all those practices and there’s no way we can do them any better than he did.  The Old Testament is not irrelevant, but some of it has been completed or fulfilled.
