Why did Jesus put the evil spirits in pigs?

A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.” He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. Mark 5:11-13

Let’s be honest, the dramatic moment of demons tossed into squealing pigs, throwing themselves off a mountain caught a lot of people’s attention.  It showed the power of God to battle so many demons, so quickly.

Pigs were unclean animals to the Jews, so Jesus tossed unclean spirits into unclean animals.  This showed the unrighteousness of demons.

The punishment of the demons was to leave the playground they enjoyed inside a human and tossing them into useless pigs.  This showed the justice of God to punish evil.
