Who is Ariel in the book of Isaiah?


Woe to you, Ariel, Ariel,
    the city where David settled!
Add year to year
    and let your cycle of festivals go on.
Yet I will besiege Ariel;
    she will mourn and lament,
    she will be to me like an altar hearth. Isaiah 29:1
            The name appears only in Isaiah 29 and is a term for Jerusalem. It means “lion’s strength” or “lion of God.”  Jesus is also called the “lion of Judah.”  Mystics have turned Ariel into an angel who special powers but that is not in the Bible.
