Above all,
my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything
else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be
condemned. James 5:12
“Swearing”
in this sense means making an oath (not cursing at God). However, if we don’t do what we say, then in
God’s eyes we are a curse (condemned).
To
be a person of our word we must do we say we are going to do, plain and
simple. If “yes” then do it. If “no” then don’t do it.
God
keeps his word and follows through on every promise. We must do the same to be more like him.
