What does a plumb line signify in the Bible?

This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”
“A plumb line,” I replied.
Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.” Amos 7:7-8
A carpenter uses a plumb line to make sure his construction is even and lined up.  If anything is off, he has to tear it down and start over.
God used a plumb line of righteousness to measure how a nation or people were doing.  When God realized the people were “off” and “out of line,” he needed to tear it all down and start over.
God measures our lives by the plumb line of Jesus Christ.  Are we holy and righteous, free of sins?  If not, one day, God will tear us down and throw us in the junk pile.
