Who was the enemy that brought down Babylon?

For I will stir up and bring against Babylon
    an alliance of great nations from the land of the north.
They will take up their positions against her,
    and from the north she will be captured.
Their arrows will be like skilled warriors
    who do not return empty-handed.
So Babylonia will be plundered;
    all who plunder her will have their fill,”
declares the Lord. Jeremiah 50:9-10

“Sharpen the arrows,
    take up the shields!
The Lord has stirred up the kings of the Medes,
    because his purpose is to destroy Babylon.
The Lord will take vengeance,
    vengeance for his temple. Jeremiah 51:11

            Persia.  Jeremiah never named the enemy, but it’s clear in the book of Daniel, chapter 5, that the last Babylonian king, Belshazzar, when he defiled the temple articles and the writing appeared on the wall, was conquered by the Medes and Persians.
Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”  Daniel 5:28
            Overnight, the Babylonians fell to the Medes and Persians who formed an alliance mentioned in Jeremiah 50:9.  The Persians kindly allowed the Israelites to return to Jerusalem and rebuild it.
