What did God "choose" us for?

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. Ephesians 1:4

God chose to create us and to love us.  He chose to adopt us into a place of sonship, a term that speaks of the closeness of family.  God also chose the way that adoption would happen—through Jesus Christ—who He freely gave to die for us.  God also chose for us to be holy and blameless in His sight, however, He also created us with freewill, which we used to choose ourselves away from God.  God’s choices for us still stand, but we have to choose to want Him.
