The Book of Mormon appeared to be translated in a language familiar with the King James version of the Bible written in 1611.  That translation would be around in Joseph Smith's time.

Let's take the word "Spake."  Spake is defined today as an archaic word, not used in modern language. 

Was the word around in 1830?  Yes, but it was losing ground.

In the King James version of the Bible the word speak appears 623 times.  The word spake appears 590.  The word spoke 282.

In the Douay Rheims 1899 Version of the Bible the word speak appears 708 times.  The word spoke appears 832 times.  The word spake does not appear.

In the Book of Mormon spake appears 161 times.  Spoke and speak 416 times.
