Each of the four living
creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its
wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
“‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’
who was,
and is, and is to come.” Revelation 4:8
Then I heard every creature
in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in
them, saying:
“To him who sits on the
throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down
and worshiped. Revelation 5:13-14
One clue we get is from Revelation. When John peeks into heaven, he sees the
angels praising God for his holiness.
God’s holiness is so stunning, so attractive, the angels and elders
can’t stop talking about it. There may
be many things we do in heaven, but God’s holiness seems to be the main
attraction. When Isaiah and the apostle John peeked into the
spiritual realm, they saw worship happening in heaven. God was being praised
for his goodness and his salvation. While praising God with song is a good thing,
will it be the only thing going on for eternity?
The idea of singing for eternity does not sound
appealing to many and we weren’t made to sing all the time or life would be a
big musical.
We praise God in many ways. We praise God in what we
say, in our work and by displaying our talents. Adam and Eve were created to
work in the garden, not to stand around and sing all day, so we too were
created to work.
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. Revelation 21:3
Heaven is described as a city and cities, as we
understand, are bustling communities of interaction and service. Could we not
work according to our talents and passions for eternity, serving others (loving
our neighbors) and sharing resources, and praise God the entire time in this
city!
It appears that praising God through song will be an
important component of our time in heaven (at least more than we do now).
However, we were created to praise God with our unique gifts and talents.
