Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods, and the LORD’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you. Deuteronomy 7:3-4

God wants to make sure nothing pulls us away from a relationship with him. It’s a principle we see in the early stages of the development of Israel. God did not want his people, who he had been organizing as a nation for 40 years, walking into the promised land and walking away from him.

Relationships do that. When we find a relationship on this earth that makes us feel good and loved, whether sexual or not, we will follow that person any where, even if it means walking away from a relationship with God.

God gets jealous.

So God wants us dating people whose first priority is Him. Then that relationship does not stray from God. They must love God first and each other second.

Then, God can draw them closer together as they grow closer to him.
