Why did the king in Ezra believe conjecture and not facts?

The king should know that the people who came up to us from you have gone to Jerusalem and are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are restoring the walls and repairing the foundations… I issued an order and a search was made, and it was found that this city has a long history of revolt against kings and has been a place of rebellion and sedition. Ezra 4:12,19

The king believed what could happen and not what was happening.  He looked at the possibility and not the potential.  He believed the “fake news.”  Don’t we do that today?  Don’t we listen to the pundits telling us what they think is happening instead of focusing on the progress and truth?  We haven’t changed much.
