“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” Luke 19:40
The
religious leaders wanted to muzzle the people in Jerusalem who cheered and
screamed over Jesus riding into town on a donkey, throwing palm branches. Jesus replied, when the leaders asked him to
tell them to keep it down, that the rocks would cry out.
His
point in that statement was saying this moment was triumphant—the lamb was
being led to slaughter on a cross to die for the sins of the world for all
time. All of creation was waiting for
this moment. The enthusiasm over this
fulfillment of all prophecies could not be contained. Even inanimate objects like rocks could not
keep quiet.
