Is it okay to have savings or extra food in the pantry?

“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:21

“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:33-34

There’s no problem with having a savings account or buying extra supplies to keep in the basement, but Jesus challenged us to consider why we were doing those things.  There’s a difference between hoarding and saving.  We can also place excuses on our actions, like saying we’re doing it “for the family” or “for retirement.”  Both good things, but do you trust your family or retirement in God’s hands?  It’s good to think future, but what about today?  Where is the real need?  And where is your faith right now?  Jesus wants us to consider what’s our real treasure.  Do we treasure God and his love for the world or do we treasure ourselves and what we think we need?
