When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’ Matthew 20:11-12
Jesus told a parable about a
landowner who hired workers at different parts of the day but at the end of the
day paid them all the same. The workers
who were hired first complained that the one’s who worked only an hour got the
same wages.
Some could complain that a person
who murdered dozens yet accepted Christ on his deathbed would be allowed into
the same heaven as the saint who served the Lord faithfully in Africa, denying himself
all the pleasures of earth, never hurting anyone.
But in heaven, would anyone really
care? Would anyone scoff at anyone else
as they both stood before Jesus? The
goal is getting off this planet with a life totally surrendered to God. Would the faithful saint really care if the
murderer got all the rewards of heaven?
No, they would all be enjoying the presence of God because of a life
fully surrendered to him, whether for forty years or forty minutes.
