Why did Jesus compliment the centurion’s faith?

The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.  Matthew 8:8-10

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” Luke 7:9

The centurion believed Jesus could heal, but he revealed an extra level of faith.  He believed Jesus had power over time and space.  He didn’t think Jesus had to actually be there, but he could direct his healing powers in any direction necessary, just as a person of authority could do.  Jesus felt the centurion understood something more about Jesus that others missed.  Jesus had power over time, space and matter.
