So they
nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they
prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have
chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas
left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the
lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. Acts 1:23-26
In
the next chapter, Acts 2, the apostles would be filled with the Holy
Spirit. While God can certainly make
lots (a sort of rolling the dice) turn out anyway he wants, the Holy Spirit
will soon speak into the lives of his followers. Lots are never spoke of again after this
moment in the New Testament. The Holy
Spirit is now our personal guide, living inside every believer. He becomes the decision maker we turn to, not
to lots.
