What’s the purpose behind the book of Deuteronomy?

In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them. Deuteronomy 1:3
Moses delivered the words in the book of Deuteronomy on the mountain overlooking the promised land.  He knew he would not enter it and wanted to give the people last minute instructions for the future and reminders/lessons learned from the past.
Remember, this is a new generation of people forty years removed from the dramatic rescue out of Egypt.  Moses wanted them to begin their possession of Israel with faith and that comes about when we look back and remember all the times God was with us.
