How am I a child of God?

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:14-17
Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are considered holy in God’s eyes, our sins are forgiven and God does not see us as sinful.  Now we can begin a new relationship with God.
God encourages us to see ourselves as family—He’s the Father and we are the children.  He has adopted us into the family and we are asked to accept that position.  Like an heir to a fortune, we also receive an inheritance—eternal life with God and access to his kingdom and glory, our home forever.
