What’s the difference between temptation and testing?

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.  James 1:13-15
A temptation is from the devil designed to make you do something against God’s will.  A testing is from God designed to make you mature and grow in your faith.
God won’t do anything to make you sin.  That’s the devil’s job.  God wants you to resist sin and grow stronger in your faith.  His testing gives you a choice to choose sin or choose God.  Satan only wants you to choose sin.
