Why does God allow nations to fall?

The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers again and again, because he had pity on his people and on his dwelling place. But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy. 2 Chronicles 36:15-16
Very simply for this reason…they disregarded Him, mocked His people, hated His word and scoffed at religious leaders.
In 2 Chronicles, God allowed Babylon and Persia to take over the land of Jerusalem.  God worked through Babylon to humble Israel and punish them for their sins.  Then God used Persia to rebuild Israel, this time (hopefully) better than before.
If a nation goes too far today, kicking God out of the country, mocking its religious leaders and despising the Bible, would not God do the same exact thing today?  He has pity on us and wants to protect us, but, eventually…enough is enough.
We must be careful and not become one of those nation God makes an example of.
