But when envoys were sent by the rulers of Babylon to ask him
about the miraculous sign that had occurred in the land, God left him to test
him and to know everything that was in his heart. 2 Chronicles 32:31
Sometimes
God tests us by leaving us vulnerable and seeing how we will respond. In the case of Hezekiah king of Judah, God
stepped in and killed the enemy (as with the case in the battle against the
Assyrians). When the Babylonians came
knocking, God left Hezekiah alone to see how he would react.
Hezekiah
failed the test and showed off all his riches in a moment of pride. The Babylonians saw the rich storehouses and
after Hezekiah’s death, they returned to take those riches and control the
nation.
God steps
in and helps us and God steps back and watches us. He wants to see if we’ve learned our lesson
and where our alliances lie. If we fail,
He will rescue us or He will allow our descendants to suffer the consequences.
