I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they
may see that they are like the animals. Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the
same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same
breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all
return. Ecclesiastes 3:18-20
Solomon made this statement in Ecclesiastes which seems to answer “yes” to this question.
So, is our fate no
different than a dead opossum on the side of the road?
“Yes” because
like the dead animal we too will die one day.
We may not expect it like the opossum or maybe we know it quite clearly.
But the value of a
dead opossum is nowhere near your value in the eyes of God.
Solomon isn’t
comparing values, but comparing fates.
We have the same fate as an animal.
We will both die one day on this earth.
However, Jesus didn’t come to die for that opossum so He could spend
eternity with him. But He did come to
die for you so you could have a relationship with God.
Yes, we will die
like that animal on the side of the road, but God loves you so much He sent His
Son Jesus Christ to cleanse you of your sins so you can be with God forever.
