God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they
lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to
enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous
evil. Ecclesiastes 6:2
Solomon in Ecclesiastes was the
wealthiest king in Israel. He had
everything he needed and wanted, but took too much. He had peace in his nation, but not in his
life.
Solomon isn’t making the case to make
money and be happy. He’s making the case
to be happy and enjoy life, so if one seeks after an extraordinary amount of wealth
and at the end of one’s life has nothing to show for it, what good is that
pursuit. Enjoying life is the key especially
because life passes by like a shadow.
If God gives you the ability to
accumulate wealth, possessions and honor, enjoy it, don’t ruin life as you
become selfish and distance yourself from other key relationships especially in
your own family.
