Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” Genesis 3:7-11
If you show a child a piece of candy and
talk about how good it is then take it away, the child now realizes something
he did not know before. He now sees
himself differently, as someone lacking something, incomplete and missing the
good things of life.
Disobedience begins when we feel we
deserve something God does not want us to have.
Once we disobey and take it for ourselves anyway, it exposes our faults,
our feelings toward ourselves, the areas of our lives that are unfulfilled and
our attitude toward God.
Now we have something to hide.
Adam and Eve were totally naked in the
garden and totally fine with that. Their
lives were happy and complete. They had
nothing to hide. Once they sinned, they
looked at themselves differently. They
were ashamed.
The Bible said they were hiding in the
garden when God showed up. God, not used
this kind of behavior, said “Where are you guys?” In other words, “Why are you hiding?” It seems he was used to them running to him,
fully exposed and transparent.
Now they were ashamed.
Once Adam and Eve saw themselves as
good, now they saw their IMPERFECTIONS and where they fell short.
Sin convinced them they were deficient,
so they felt EXPOSED—physically, relationally and spiritually. Their physical
nakedness was a reaction to their spiritual nakedness. Sin revealed their disobedient heart and they
didn't like it.
Now they wanted to HIDE and COVER-UP
their actions.
But they could not. God found them and forced them to confess.
We cannot hide our sins from God
either. We must reveal it all to him –
the naked truth…who we really are.
