Why are they called "fruits" of the spirit?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.  Galatians 5:22-26

Paul in his letter to the Galatians draws a distinction between those who are saved (with the Spirit) and those who are not (without the Spirit).  If you have the Spirit, there will be evidence, just like you can tell an orange tree by the oranges hanging from its branches.  A Christian will exhibit these characteristics in his/her life if they are saved.

If you have the Spirit, you will have a more "fruitful" life, loving others instead of harming them.
