We would like to think Mary rode a donkey.  How cruel, it would seem, that a nine month pregnant woman was forced to walk 90 miles.

But there is no indication from the Bible that she rode a donkey.  Many of you ladies can't imagine walking through the mall at nine months pregnant, so to walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem seems impossible.

Donkeys were a luxury, not a necessity, in those times.  Not everyone had a donkey.

So maybe Joseph was a successful carpenter/handyman and could afford to drive around in his donkey/pick up truck.

Then again, maybe someone loaned Joseph and Mary their donkey to help them make the trip or gave them a lift.

But like most scenes at Christmas time, this one has no biblical support.
