Should Muhammad or Jesus be obeyed?

The Koran does state that to follow Muhammad is the same as following God.  Look at how many verses confirm this.

He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah: But if any turn away, We have not sent thee to watch over their (evil deeds). Surah 4:80

They ask thee (O Muhammad) of the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to Allah and the messenger, so keep your duty to Allah, and adjust the matter of your difference, and obey Allah and His messenger, if ye are (true) believers. Surah 8:1

That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger. Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is severe in punishment. Surah 8:13

O you who believe! answer (the call of) Allah and His Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life; and know that Allah intervenes between man and his heart, and that to Him you shall be gathered. Surah 8:24

O ye who believe! Betray not Allah and His messenger, nor knowingly betray your trusts. Surah 8:27

And know that whatever thing you gain, a fifth of it is for Allah and for the Messenger. . . Surah 8:41

And there are some of them who molest the Prophet and say: He is one who believes every thing that he hears; say: A hearer of good for you (who) believes in Allah and believes the faithful and a mercy for those of you who believe; and (as for) those who molest the Messenger of Allah, they shall have a painful punishment. They swear to you by Allah that they might please you and, Allah, as well as His Messenger, has a greater right that they should please Him, if they are believers. Surah 9:61-62

They say, “We believe in Allah and in the messenger, and we obey”: but even after that, some of them turn away: they are not (really) Believers. Surah 24:47

They only are the true believers who believe in Allah and His messenger. . . Surah 24:62

But if ye seek Allah and His Messenger, and the Home of the Hereafter, verily Allah has prepared for the well-doers amongst you a great reward. . . But any of you that is devout in the service of Allah and His Messenger, and works righteousness,- to her shall We grant her reward twice: and We have prepared for her a generous Sustenance. . . It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path. Surah 33:20, 31, 36

O ye who believe! Obey Allah and obey the messenger, and render not your actions vain. Surah 47:33

Prophets were simple people, used by God to deliver a message. They were to be respected and listened to carefully. Muhammad, throughout the Koran, is given power and complete control. The Koran elevates Muhammad to a status above a simple man. He becomes the Message itself and a Messiah.

Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and honour him, and help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him: they are the successful. Say (O Muhammad): O mankind! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah to you all - (the messenger of) Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and He giveth death. So believe in Allah and His messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, who believeth in Allah and in His Words, and follow him that haply ye may be led aright. Surah 7:157-158

Surah 7 says that Muhammad:
  • Could not read or write
  • Was prophesied in the Torah and Gospel (1)
  • Determined what is right or wrong.
  • Relieved the people of their burdens
  • Would make those who believe in him, honor him and help him successful.
Jesus said to his followers in John 14:

”Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
”If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”  Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. But the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me."

Jesus made these claims in John 14:
  • Trust in God and you can trust in Jesus.
  • Jesus is going to prepare a place in heaven for those that trust in him.
  • Jesus is the way to God, his father.
  • God is in Jesus and Jesus is in God (the miracles testify to this).
  • You can still ask Jesus to help you and he will (meaning he must currently be alive and able to hear our thoughts).
  • Jesus will send a counselor, the Holy Spirit.
  • If you love Jesus, you will obey him.
  • These words that Jesus spoke are from God, not from him.
  • The Holy Spirit will teach us and remind us of what we need to know.
  • Jesus grants us peace (so don’t worry).
  • Jesus is coming back.
  • Jesus obeys his father, God.
Jesus emphasizes relationship with him as a motivator to follow him. He wants his followers to love him.

Muhammad emphasizes just obedience.

Jesus backs up his claims with miracles.

Muhammad did no miracles and claimed he was a simple man.

We want to obey those who have more power and knowledge than ourselves or we would only want to follow ourselves. We want to obey those who have our best interests in mind, who love us. Jesus displayed that power and desires a relationship with us. Jesus should be followed and obeyed.
