Is every bad thing we do because of Satan?

He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 1 John 3:8

In one sense the answer to this is yes if we look at the beginning of sin in the garden of Eden and the temptation that caused man to fall for years to come. The garden started out as perfect, with no evil or bad existing. Because of one temptation, Satan’s influence is still felt today.

In another sense the answer to this is no since we are quick to want to blame Satan for everything that happens to us, taking no responsibility for our own actions. “It was Satan attacking me!” “The devil made me do it!” “Lucifer is working over time here!” Remember Adam and Eve agreed to follow the devil’s suggestion.  We do the same thing.

. . .in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes. 2 Corinthians 2:11

While Satan and his demons scheme to bring us down, they only suggest to us the wrong thing to do. They do not force us or have access to the control panel of our mind. We are just as much a co-conspirator in the crimes of sin.

God gives us the armor to keep Satan away.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:10-18

It’s our choice.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:7-10
