Does the Koran say that women can be beaten?

Culturally, women were treated differently in the first century than they are today. Both the Bible and the Koran reveal different standards and rights that were shown to women. However, in the Koran, Muhammad gave men the right to beat their wives, with double standards for punishment between men and women.

If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way. If two men among you are guilty of lewdness, punish them both. If they repent and amend, Leave them alone; for Allah is Oft-returning, Most Merciful. Surah 4:15-16

In the case of a man and a woman being caught in adultery, the woman receives the punishment of house arrest until death.  The man gets “punished” (not clearly defined), but he can simply say he is sorry and go free. However, in another verse, the punishment for them is the same.

The woman and the man guilty of adultery or fornication,- flog each of them with a hundred stripes: Let not compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day: and let a party of the Believers witness their punishment. Surah 24:2

The Koran says disobedient women are to be beaten.

Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great. Surah 4:34

The woman’s disobedience is unclear.  Did they commit adultery or simply not have dinner ready? This is an open ended reason for corporal punishment.

Allah told Job to beat his wife for her disobedience.

And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with It and do not break your oath; surely We found him patient; most excellent the servant! Surely he was frequent m returning (to Allah). Surah 38-44

The Bible treats women with respect and equality. Men are never encouraged to harm a woman in any way. In fact, the Bible asks that women (wives) be treated with sacrificial love, the same kind of sacrificial love that Christ showed us.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church—for we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:25-33
